How Should I Use Issuu for School Marketing Communications?

What is Issuu?

Issuu is an online document-sharing platform that allows users to publish and discover magazines, brochures, catalogues, leaflets etc. You can upload files from your computer, your Google Drive, and Dropbox. With Issuu’s page-turning animations, it's like reading physical documents. However,

unlike a physical print publication, with Issuu, you are able to embed videos, web links, and shopping links to your publications, resulting in a unique interactive reader experience.

Issuu documents can be embedded straight into your  website so your visitors don't have to leave your page or open a new tab

How Can My School Use Issuu?

Issuu is a place for all your school documents allowing easy viewing and sharing. We recommend this platform is used and managed by the marketing department as a lot of your documents will be part of wider marketing assets.

You can break your publications down into articles for an easier reading experience. For example, let’s say you created a publication detailing the catering options for the upcoming academic year, you may wish to turn each day of the week into an article, so that students and parents can quickly see what’s on offer for lunch today without having to find the specific page in the publication.

Multiple publications can also be grouped by ‘Stacks’ that can be embedded into your Interactive Schools website and can make it easier for your audience to navigate through your content.

See below examples from @saint-nicks and @bsnetherlands using the Stacks to organise their publications

There are many different ways you can share and format your Issuu publications; QR codes, publication links, fullscreen reader and of course embeds. You can also choose to turn your publication into a custom GIF, or you can even purchase printouts of publications directly through Issuu.

It’s important to note that not all Issuu functionalities are available on the free plan. On Issuu’s free Basic plan, you are limited to five publications that are up to 50 MB and 50 pages each.  If you had more than five publications when these limitations came into effect on the 19th of June 2023, all of your publications are still hosted by Issuu, but only your five most recent publications that do not exceed the size limits are viewable to readers. If you wish to extend your Issuu library beyond five publications you will need to switch to either a Starter, Premium, Optimum, or Custom Team paid plan. For an overview of the benefits and tiering of each paid plan, please see the table below.

Similar to platforms such as Canva, you can also use Issuu to create social media graphics. Issuu offers many pre-existing templates for you to use and edit to fit your school’s brand guidelines. If you are currently using other platforms more renowned for design, you’ll be glad to hear that you can upload your designs from Canva, Adobe Express, or Adobe InDesign to your publications and social posts.

If you are interested in selling your publications, you are able to do so via a Stripe account. This could come in handy if you were selling publications for a charity event, or if you were selling game day programmes etc. There is the possibility to advertise via Issuu, both in publications or on Issuu’s document page, however, as it is unlikely Issuu will be the platform that your prospective audience use the most, we recommend prioritising paid advertising on other platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
